The names "Marcus and Dominique" and "Plant" are becoming synonymous with "good house music" in New York City. The duo has recently celebrated their 3-year anniversary of the Plant Saturday night residency at Centro-Fly. The 2nd birthday of their successful and swanky East Village hotspot has just passed as well. Plant Music, the record label, has just been re-launched with two killer 12" releases. Plant (their production name) are the artists on the second release, out this October, and the tracks are killer.
So what could these two possibly do to raise their status at all? How to create a national phenomenon out of what is so obviously a one-city monopoly? A mix CD, of course: Decks and the City [vol.one New York] from takeout records.
SB: So you guys have been a DJ team for how long now?
M&D: Since 1995/6
SB: Describe your sound. How do your tastes differ and what does each of you bring to the table as an individual?
M&D: Marcus tends to lean a little more underground and techno, and Dominique tends to lean a little bit more towards hits [underground hits] and vocals.
SB: You recently did your first mix CD. How was that and how did you approach it?
M&D It was cool, we tried to do something that could be enjoyed at home, in the car and in a party situation. We did not want to do a full-on dancefloor CD. We tried to start mellow and melodic before getting a little bit more bumpy and tracky. We recorded the mix live in Centro-Fly. It was fun to do.
SB: What projects are you working on right now? What direction do you see your music taking?
M&D: We are working mostly on production. We are making music that incorporates songs, vocals and also a lot of old dance music influences - especially from the acid house era. Right now, Plant Music, the 12" label is our vehicle for releases. Our second 12" comes out at the end of October.
SB: So, Plant the artists.. the label.. the bar.. the promotion entity.. all quite successful in New York. When do the plans for global domination get implemented? Or rather, what's next??
M&D: The label mostly, and touring a little. We also hope to open a new venue in the future.
The mix CD "Decks and the City: vol. one - New York - Marcus and Dominique" will be available everywhere in November courtesy of takeout records.
