"I think History is made by people who said
'Why' ? and Music by people who said 'Why not ?'" (Some
politician) |

The first full album the Freestyle team was
able to lay his hands on, the WHOLE album is designated by all four
members as GC. Featuring a '91 GU track entitled 'Entercourse of the New
Age', (he was 18 years old !) which we can say by now, marks the beginning
of a new era in Groove-music : the GU-era... |

"I show you mine if you show me yours" (2 GU fans comparing their record collection) |
|
Second GU album we managed to find, and boy,
it's a total GC again ! ‘J-Dance’ and ‘The Cherrybums’ have that old-skool
sound (like the ‘Essentials’-tracks), 'Eazy Grooves' is sooooo GU, 'Disco
Fusion' is according to some of the Freestyle team, including myself THE
GU TRACK = THE DEEP HOUSE TRACK OF ALL TIMES. 'Disco Fusion' is a
M.A.S.T.E.R.P.I.E.C.E. , spell it out, say it loud and put it on ! The
breaks, the grooves and the analogue themes blend together to form
perfectionism itself. Gu sets new limits for both bedroom and club
music… |

"Music is the key, GU is what lies behind the door" (The Gatekeeper) |
|
The Parables continue… Now teamed up with Dae Dae, Vick Lavender (of whom we don’t know much) and good old Boo Williams, GU takes his musical style one step further. Never before sounding this advanced, all typical GU-elements are there. From the natural bass to the dub-in-space alike details, one might think that this album is somewhat monotone. But hear the ingenious breaks of ‘Melodic Vibes’, the natural cracklin’ bass of ‘All Love’, the intruiging atmosphere of ‘Magic Potion’ and the stompin’ dubs that carry ‘Traditional House’. Traditional ? Know your roots… (Outspan) Note that this record is super-hard to find. Only one (1) copy of it is known to have been sold in Belgium. So, thanks to the people at Dance Music Resource List who helped us out and saved our GU-addicted buts… |

"Choose life, choose a family, choose a car, choose a house, choose a job, choose a washing machine, choose a CD-player...I choose not to chose a CD-player. I chose a turntable. The reasons ? There are none. Who needs reasons when you got GU ?" (original from the movie Trainspotting) |

For a GU-record, this one is, believe it or
not, really E.A.S.Y. to find. Spread through a lot of decent record
stores, the people at Peacefrog might have thought this was the record
that would introduce the Jeff-Mills-and-Darren-Emmerson-loving masses to
GU. We appreciate the iniative very much of course. But it seems the
GU-fanclub still consists out of a widespread core of mad music lovers.
Too bad, because this record has it all : a lot of jazz (‘To The King O.I.’), dancefloor-bustin’ grooves (‘Black Slaves’), down-tempo funk (‘Negro Cry’) and…a GU Classic ! Yes, yes, yes : ‘Keep The Hidden Treasures’ both states GU’s ideas of Underground music and brings us a very uncomplicated, joyfull and fresh approach of Deep House music. The Hidden Treasures meant here are definetely GU-records and the fact that they are hidden is well illustrated by the fact that they are hard to find. Maybe those beauties are meant to remain undiscovered by the masses to the end of time. Amen. (Outspan) |
| A Story of Deepness narrated by Glenn Underground |
|
|
| Yes, it's here,
finally in our hands, the vinyl release of the new Glenn Underground, "A
story of deepness". After waiting so long, this week it arrived, we ripped
the package out of the hands of mr. Postman, while unwrapping it, ran to
our turntables and with shaking hands played the first notes of "A story
of deepness". It all begins with Strong Island Jaz and it becomes
immediately clear this is undeniable Glenn Underground. And still, it's
unlike the Atmosfear or Jerusalem EP's album, as it subtly changes sounds,
harmonics, basslines. The jazz in Strong Island Jaz must reflect the repetitive trumpet on a bassline of which the tempo is perhaps a little faster than usual for Glenn Underground. The next track, London Sirens is a pearl in this album. It features a conga-like rythm section, moog sounds and yes, a distorted siren like sound as well and nice guitar licks too. Yes, Glenn Underground shows he is still the master of the deep story! But in this album, Glenn Underground is in for surprises as well. On Solomon's song, GU presents a track that starts of like a R'n'B arranged song that evolves into a garage sound. Unfortunately, both the R'n'B part and the garage part are uninspired, poor interpretions. No problem though, as GU is quickly getting our attention again with the superb Disco Worm. Perhaps this is the hottest track of the album. Yes, there is that easy paced deep drivin' bassline again with a multilayered texture of synth arrangements. This time, the moog sounds are more crazy, weird, cute, fantastic than ever ! Disco Worm invites us for instant party atmosphere! And the party can continue, with Vapors of Vibes, a very moody jazzy and funky deephouze track. A typical GU track so to say, but with a fresh '99 sound, perfecting his mastering of the sound. It's time for vocals again on Motherless Child. Here, GU brings a moody deephouze groove with a touch of soul, more into the style of his earlier PAN releases. And that's not it, for the vocals. Come On, is an uptempo vocal house track. These vocals come from Jackie Green and she just sounds great and fresh in the atmospheric synth melodies that GU weaves around it. And, yes, GU is not forgetting his typical long stretched moogs here! And finally, we conclude with GU's finger tips. Not surprisingly this title, as GU showcases his fast keyboard playing talent on an uptempo deep groover, creating once again, the essence of the very GU sound : deep, oh so deep. As usual, when an artist is at such a high level, there is always the doubt, pressure and fear when a new album comes around. We can hear everyone ask the questions, 'will GU be able to bring us once more the quality deephouze we are used to ?' Well, we hope that with this review the answer to the question is a BIG YESSS! "A story of deepness" is a successor in the long series of deep GU music, where he subtly explores fresh sounds, but staying within his very own deep style. And yes, we can't wait for the next episode in this exciting deep story. Tell us some more GU, we do not feel like sleeping yet :) (ez) |

"Music is our spiritual guide through life" (Guidance)
tracks: realaudio: |
|
After taking a look at the exquisite cover
art, I couldn't help being just a littlebit
disappointed when I saw there where only three previously unreleased
tracks on this album. Al seven others have appeared earlier on one of the many
maxi singles GU produced for the Guidance imprint. Then again, you could
say the same thing about the two "Parables"-albums, and you
didn't here anyone complaining about those ... anyway let's get to the
important part: the music. The overall atmosphere is jazzy and funky. The older tracks all have the typical GU-deep-house touch while the new ones are more funk oriented. Two up-tempo tracks, "City People" and "Society Rules", that breath the typical sound of 70s spacefunk with complex rhythmical structures, uplifing vocals by Mikkiel, quality flute and keyboard melodies. "Retrun to Zion" is nice example of modern latin-jazz. Finally "Funki-Ghetto" and "Translucent Blues" are the real loungy tracks on this album, a perfect combination of todays acid-jazz and the 70s rare-groove sound of Lonnie Liston Smith and Roy Ayers. The combination of accoustic and electronic instruments is very refreshing, this really proofs GU is capable of creating a lot more than "just" deep-house. |
