Nautilis
Sketches
Planet Mu CD 2002
Practically all releases on Planet Mu have one thing in common: they contain at least one track that is so good it justifies buying the release regardless the quality of the rest of the tracks (Much like those 70s funk albums, I hear Ez Boy saying). Kid Spatula's Full Sunken Breaks had Come On Board, Tim Tetlow and o9 respectively had Cyrenic and No Delays For Days featured on the limited 7" series and Nautilis has Ruffion.rmx on the Sketches album ...

During my first listen, I was skipping trough the tracks to get a general idea of what this album was like. Suddenly, when Ruffion.rmx began, I stopped skipping for what I heard sounded marvellous. That bass guitar, those keyboards and weird voices flowing together in one of the best downtempo tracks I've heard in a long time, goose bumps guaranteed!
Upon further listening Sketches revealed more fine tracks: Starting off with typical spacey IDM in Rochesta and the Boards of Canada-styled Living Possum to the crunchy 888 with those funny glitches in the rhythm. Then slowly inserting more and more jazzy elements slowly evolving into some kind of experimental future-jazz with dreamy melodies in The Breaks Vol.2 full on melancholica in 492 Cups To China and funny distorted acid meets groovy synths with Dyslexik.

Nautilis succeeds where many other electronix producers seem to fail: creating an album with consistent quality using different atmospheres and sounds instead of using the same sounds over and over again in all tracks. A recommended album for adventurous mu-sic lovers.
