Daiphlux
Mbrnjnftr
AIM Records CD/LP - 2002
We don't have too many regional labels operating in Belgium, so time to pay some attention to the practically unknown label called AIM. Based in Brugge, one of the most beautiful cities in our country.

Their newest release from Daiphlux is a full album called Mbrnjntfr (not sure it the title actually has a meaning) and appears to be some sort of hybrid µ-ziq / Autechre descendant. By now the combination of spacey synths with distorted beats may seem a bit outdated, but rest assured -if performed well- this concept hasn't lost much of its power and appeal. In fact yours truly has been hooked ever since Tri Repetae came out.

The remarkable thing about Daiphlux' music is the "randomness". There seems to be no recognizable structure in the burbling jumble of various sounds and noises that are supposed to represent rhythms and beats, making the mysterious melodies the only actual grip you have on the tracks. After listening several times, the melodies really start to grow on you, I've got the impression this album is going to be a classic. The dark atmosphere and improvisational structure give it an extra touch of originality.

Certainly a recommended release.
