Future Beat Alliance
Disconnected
Delsin - CD 2002
My first encounter with the sound of Matthew Puffet must have been around 1997, the time when I accidentally stumbled upon his early productions on Void Records. An obscure British label that saw no more than 8 releases during it's short existence. Apart from one track on the "DIY: Serve Chilled 2" compilation and a couple of singles, the FBA project was surrounded with silence, until the afirmation of signing with Delsin through the Audio Photo EP in 2000 and his recent debut album Disconnected.

Mostly straightforward rhythms with a few sidesteps to quirky breakbeats, the roots of the FBA sound obviously lie within Detroit techno, enlarged with atmospheric electro and ambient techno.
Yet the element that makes me appreciate this music the most, are the constantly occurring moog-melodies and synthlines which evoke the typical spacey atmosphere inherent to this kind of productions. Done with so much inspiring craftsmanship and variation it's a real pleasure to hear a fresh approach appearing in every track.

Seeing other artists such as Fabrice Lig's Soul Designer (F Com) project and the mysterious The Other People Place (Warp) are doing things with the same vibe. Maybe this could be regarded as a comeback for the warm and melodic side of techno.
