![]() Ambidextrous / Novel 23 Cross Split EP 1x12" Shaped Harmonics SH SPLIT 01
|
The UK and USA are no longer the sole sources for cutting-edge electronic music, regions like Scandinavia, Japan, Australia and Russia have appeared on the map over the past years. This is specially true in the IDM/electronics genre, releases from all over the planet are surfacing ... an overkill of releases is possible, so a good selection of what's available is necessary. Therefore I would like to recommend these first two releases on a new Russian label, based in Moscow, called Shaped Harmonics. The aptly titled "Cross-Split EP" is a six track split 12" from Ambidextrous and Novel 23. It has a pretty original concept where the two producers present three of their own tracks and one of the tracks has been remixed by the other artist. The interesting thing is you not only hear the artist's own style but also the mixture with the style of the other producer. While Ambidextrous explores the spacey melodies with crunchy beats, Novel 23 brings forth his trademark soft melancholic electronics, similar to his "Melodies of Childhood ..." album on Pitchcadet. The full album by Ambidextrous has excellent artwork which forms a very good graphical interpretation of the music: surrealistic and recognizable at the same time. The overall tempo is pretty chilled down with dreamy ambient and a few sidesteps to harsh electro. I can't help thinking there's also a big influence of early-90s quality trance on this CD, admittedly it's been altered trough a heavy IDM filter, but it's there and it fits in quite well! Every track proved to have many layers of sounds which makes repeated listening really enjoyable as you discover new turns and twists every time. All in all it's a solid and varied album that keeps up a consistent atmosphere. Say Vegin |
