Nils Petter Molvaer
Solid Ether
1x CD ECM Records
Chicken skin or goose bumps... it's all about music touching your deepest feelings and emotions. It is a rare feeling that happens only to real music afficiendos. It is even more rare these days with ever more releases which do only cause a feeling of 'so what ...' being so uninteresting that you just quickly give the record or cd back to the man behind the counter in a music shop. But it happens and it still happens and you wouldn't read this review if it didn't happen with the album of Nils Petter Molvaer. One thing that immediately catches your attention is the unique accentuation of a melancholic trumpet on soft but complex electro and drum'n'bass textures. It is the contrast between the calm, simple but superb trumpet and highly complex rythmic variations and effects that create an overall intelligent sound.

At times the music is rythmic and wild, yet, the calm foreground trumpet puts back the peacefull delicateness into the music and so evolve constant contrasts between the layers in the tracks. This is music you'll want to listen to, a nice confrontation between you and the Solid Ether album with nothing else that interferes in order to grasp its fullest effect. As such, the smoke level of this album is stellar high. Take something like "Ligotage", "Trip" or "Vilderness 2" and you'll know what I mean. In short, Solid Ether is a highly recommended after midnight melancholic sofa album. Explore it for yourself !
