Collection Pt. 1: After The Rain
Svek 2LP
The scandinavian-based Svek label has been around for a while, releasing classy deephouse, sometimes leaning over a bit too much to cheaper techhouse. But releases like those from The Persuader convinced us they're worth checking out.

A word of caution: if you haven't heard of Svek before, you are most likely suffering from Abbaphobia, which is the fear for scandinavian music. We don't blame you, we're just attracting your attention to decent music from the cooler sides of our planet in which violin abusal is a much less common crime.

'After the rain' is meant as a collection of downtempo tunes, one would guess from the title. But there's also some deephouse featured, so it's more like a sampler which justifies the subtitle: 'collection pt. 1'. Am I boring you already? Is Abbaphobia kicking in again? Out of Prozac? Good, because we got some soothing tunes coming up.

Joel Mull's contribution is titled "You've got the rythm", leaving him with making up some melodies. He doesn't because the track is like a Chaser or Deadbeats collection of intruiging beats and blimps. Not half bad. Dj INC with "True school" comes up with a superb downtempo track, featuring live sax that follows the slooowww tempo neatly. True old-skool lounge stuff.

Since I have no clue what the titles "S°ommar äng" and "Lördag" might mean, I suggest we translate them as "bed room deep house pärt 1" and "bed room deep höuse part 2". They are mostly apted for chillin' than for dancing.

Sunday Brunch gets to record two tracks on this compilation, the second being a gift from the compiler because the first one is so good. "Honung" is more classic Svek work (yeah, it'll be featured on their 'Greatest Hits', dumbo) but fitting together deep dance beats and a chilly atmosphere is reserved for people who have great ideas from time to time. "Things you said" is not such a great idea. Straight tech-house. Only for the fans.

We close this one off with "Pulse" by Forme which is more of the 'rainy' stuff, meaning dark dubs and seemingly random samples and keyboard strings. "Roots" by Universal Funk misses some originality in both title and concept but the sofa-feeling is definitely there.

To sum up: although 'After The Rain' is worth putting up to get rid of Abbaphobia once and for all -scandinavians can make good music-, it has some serious drawbacks:

1. You can seldomly play it in Belgium since it never stops raining here.
2. With non-scandinavian keyboard settings, you can't get the ° on the o if you want to write a decent review about it.
3. You can't dry your hair with it unless you keep flapping the cover which results in a strained elbow.
