Since long the Schematic Music Company has been experimenting with the fusion of Hip-Hop Beats and Electronica. It wasn't until Scott Herren appeared that I started to notice productions that appealed to my taste and where really refreshing. He's released a lot of records lately (with various projects such as Delarosa & Asora, Prefuse 73, Savath & Savalas) and there's more things coming up. The tracks on Agony Part 1 have a thick layer of percussive elements surround the well-hidden, but thoroughly beautiful, melodies. It's really worth the effort of trying to get trough the dense pack of clicks, scratches, hi-hats, plops, cuts, etc and discover the fascinating structures buried inside. It's the kind of thing that really needs your full attention otherwise you can't fully grasp the beauty of this music. That's why it's recommended to put on the good ol' headphones when listening to this album. The Backsome EP basicly consists of older, never before released, tracks. Maybe a bit less complex, but you can clearly notice the same quality and characteristic style as in Agony Part 1. The Estrocare EP has an even more intense Hip-Hop influence. This really sounds like traditional raps and beats being scattered to pieces and then randomly pasted together. It takes a little time, for me anyway, to get used to this style, but the underlying structures are inventive to say the least. Say Vegin April 2001
