Time to bring some light to yet another side of the constantly growing and evolving scene of modern electronics. Most of the electronica albums that are reviewed at FreestyleGrooves are somewhat dreamy, soft, ambient oriented. But once in a while we can also appreciate some rougher stuff :) As a sublabel of Rotterdam's Clone label, djak-up-bitch (no pun intended) started off with electro-techno releases. But that quickly changed to more experimental cutting-edge electronica/IDM output. This third cd release features some of the highlights of the 12" catalog and some exclusive tracks too. The overall feeling is pretty dark and harsh, but there are some smoother elements and tracks as well. The Autechre and Funkstörung influences are obvious, but these artists manage to take the genre one step further. I'm sure there's still a heck of lot of stuff that's even harder and faster than this, but hey, I'm still "Say Vegin the chill-music afficionado" and can enjoy a nice beat architecture as long as there's some melodic background to support it ... can't blame me for that. Ok, so here's a description for some of my favourite tracks: Syndrone : Pandu Good old distorted breakbeats and dreamy melodies. Along the way more and more distortion is added. May be traditional, but nonetheless superb quality. EOG : Reqmx Very nice intro, then from the second the baseline comes in, it immediately grabs you on a dark trip between flowing and sneering sounds. Phako : Reform Sounds like a PC-game soundtrack recorded through an over-modulated soundcard and played in slow-motion which evokes an incredible psychedelic feel. Quench : Bin Starts of a bit dull, but really get's going after the middle when an incredibly strange sound appears and the track really begins to show it's beauty. Swap : Velth Known for his excellent releas on Musik aus Ström, delivers a quality track in the well know MaS style. Brilliant! L'Usine : Fog : orig. version by Funckarma The more chilled-down side is provided by L'usine with his organic, chaotic approach on electronics. Leekon : Tricut Melancholic synths with slow rolling beats form a mysterious atmosphere. Say Vegin |
