![]() Jazzanova The remixes 1997-2000 2xCD 5xLP JCR |
You might not believe this, but we actually bought this double album
with resistance. First of all, the album has been released with quite some attention. Secondly, the title "the remixes" often says enough.
We just hate the thirty-seventh remix of whatever. The question always arises, "was it really necessary to remix this one more time?" If it was not for SKI and "Fifths" of which we have to admit we didn't know the original, this review might not have been here. But this funkin' as hell track immediately caught our attention and due to lack of time we quickly grabbed the album, paid and went home. It is only there that we fully discovered how carefully crafted all of the remixes are. The work of Jazzanova clearly goes beyond some bass amplication or adding a break here and there and making the version thus somewhat longer than the original or somewhat more dancefloor oriented. What Jazzanova turned out of Men From the Nile and "Watch them come" is perhaps the most stunning example. They give the track more power to start with, throw in bossa a volonté, add a very deep break, let it evolve into a funkin' groove and give it a more latin than ever effect by playing with the vocals. The work here is clearly a showcase for how well Jazzanova masters all these facets of music. This craftsmanship goes into almost every remix. They know like no one else how to carefully balance between keeping the groove in a track, adding percussion to give it an uplifting exotic tough and blend enough synth effects with it to keep it deep and atmospheric. What Jazzanova does with Har-you percussion group and "Welcome to the party", Azymuth and "Amazon adventure", Liquid Lounge and "Complete life", Tate's place and "Burnin'" are one for one examples of this stylish approach. The carefull selection of tracks and the consistency of the remix style gives this double album also a extremely nice overall feeling with not really a single track disappointing or breaking with the style of the album. So, if you should have any feelings of resistance as we had when seeing this album in a store, do check it out, you might be pleasantly surprised! ez nov/2000 |
