![]() Susumu Yokota Sakura 1xCD 2xLP Leaf / Skintone |
As summertime is over by now and chilly autumn days are upon us, it's
time to hunt for warm intimate sounds to liven up these cosy rooms with
colorfull lightning for a real relaxing atmospheres. And while cold rain and wild autumn winds are tickling your window, you can just
safely sit inside and enjoy ... enjoy Sakura for example. It's clear that Leaf records isn't really the label that goes for the easy side of music and so it goes with Sakura. Leaf records presents us this time the Japanese artist Susumu Yokota. His Sakura album contains a warm and fuzzy blend of ambient, jazz and electronica. Most tracks are sparse melodic textures that are walking the line between jazz and ambient. Beats are only here and there present, on "Genshi" for example for something that vaguely reminds to a Maurizio beat or "Hisen" for a fully downtempo track. The minimalist approach is nicely colored with equally atmospheric female chants on "Azukiiro no kaori" and "Kodomotachi". But without exception, Susumu Yokota provides our ears with enough interesting sounds for lots of hours of listening pleasure. Yes, it is a chill album, yes it's for lounging and relaxing, but it's all brought in a creative and original package that make it clearly stand out from the crowd. If you liked the Conjoint albums and are looking for something similar but at the same time different enough to be original, run to the record store and buy the Sakura album. And while you're dreaming away, think for a second about the Freestylegrooves site who recommended you this pearl :) oct 2000 ez |
