This is already the third release on the new WGW sublabel Wha? Roots Recordings,
the first 2 releases were "The park EP" by the 19th street brothers and a triple 12" pack with remixes of the fantastic "hifi" by the Wizards of ooze. (the original of hifi is also included on the 1st 12" ! ) both are great so i couldn't wait to get my hands on this new wha? release... It's produced by the Trio Delicado who consist of : Jan Costermans, Bermd Thoné and Wouter Smets, all instruments on this ep are played live (the sleeve has detailed descriptions of who played what) no samples were used except some small vocal thingies maybe, which makes the tracks sound very fresh and pure. Now for some detailed descriptions : Side A,track 1 : Piccolo Loco Starts of with alot of Brazillian style percussion after a while the synth pads kick in to make the track go deeper and deeper, there's a whole lot of percussion sounds going on in the track to spice things up a bit, if i have to describe the style i'd call it a Brazillian lounge groove, the style is similar to some of buscemi's music. Side A,track 2 : Break-fast Funky deep track with great bass and guitar licks ...me like this ! Side B,track 1 : A la carte This one has some very powerful deep rhodes sounds and a spicy drum backing ,also alot of deep reverb echo's, to me this one is the killer on the ep ! Really smooth and deep. Side B,track 2 : Champaign Some minimalistic percussion and nice deep grooves make this the most chilly, laidback track of the ep there's also some kind of vocal in this one, it's not really singing...i'll just call it scatting along with the guitar or sumthing :) ...pure relaxation. Conclusion : this is a very diverse ep with something in it for all deep music lovers, top quality ! ...keep an eye on wha? , i know i will! Your freelance freestyle groover, Tommy :) |
