![]() V.A. SoulFood 1xCD, 5x12" Cookin' Records |
It was during the last days of the year 99, on a
rainy afternoon when suddenly a compilation CD totally changes the view you already made up about
the best compilations of 99. Yes, it was clear that "More space to
dance" on Alola, "Another Taste"
on Internal Bass and "Hi-Fidelity Lounge" on Guidance would be among the best, but then, on almost the last
day of the year, there comes SoulFood demanding at least a spot in the 3 best compilations of 99.
There is no denying we will give it the spot it deserves ! The SoulFood compilation on Cookin' Records is simply amazing for its consistency. We were first thinking it was an album, but no, these all seem to be different artists. SoulFood comes into the category of acidjazz, jazzgroove, nu-funk music. Delicious instrumental blends of warm bass lines, latin ingredients, complex polyrythms, flutes, sax and synth all leading to infectious warm jazzfunkgrooves. The consistency of the compilation is unparallelled. Not a single track is below the overall extremely high standard of SoulFood. But if you ask us to pick out some really super track, we'd like to recommend Blame and "Fifth Sun" as well as Blame & Odyssey and "Twin Moon" and also Odyssey and "SolStice" throwing deep basslines with moody panflutes and synths on top assuring your mind will drift far away. On SoulFood, all tracks fall into the midtempo acidjazz category, with the exception of the last track, Longers and "The Brain" which offers a smooth laidback slowtempo exit on this marvellous compilation. Already declared essential for 1999, SoulFood ! ez jan/2000 |
