Crazy Penis
A nice hot bath with ...
Paperecords 004
1xCD, 2xLP
Thanks to various strong releases, the Paper label has claimed it's own place between the large number of independent record companies in the UK. They have established a unique sound and this release is no exception. After a few maxi singles, the first album of Crazy Penis has been released.

Chriss Todd & James Baron bring us 9 down-tempo house-tracks. They've given a lot attention to detail, and it shows! All tracks are stuffed with nice samples and are quite varied. As a result of the rather slow tempo and the complex structures this isn't exactly dancefloor stuff, but it sure is excellent home-listening material.

In almost every track there's an alternation between a 4/4 house-beat and breakbeats, the switching between the two is very subtle, sometimes you hardly notice it. Furthermore there are also some 80s Funk influences, like the Barry White-ish vocals on "3 play it cool", or the spacey synths near the end of "Do it good". The typical short moog-synths, de warm basslines and the sensual sound of the sax (i.e. "Omega Man") it's all there!

With "I am love" and "Smoothin' Groovin'" we get 2 future jazz cuts, and there's even time for a bit of humor, yes indeed, in "A little something" you can hear a very
funny sample from the Muppet Show!

Although I haven't mentioned all tracks individualy, there's not a single one that disappoints. This is a very consistent album and it's certainly one of the best i've heard in months.
