Ok, we decided to attend the "Gershwin's World" from Herbie Hancock and for sure expected a lot from it. Well, triple what we expected, add 10 to it and multiply by 17, and you'll not even come close to what we actually experienced. Herbie Hancock, Eddie Henderson and their band showed their absolute mastership of bringing an explosion of creativity, quality, talent, humour and richness of music. We were absolutely stunned by the cleanness of playing mixed with so much variety and inspiration, especially from the percussionist. The concert explored music from ambientjazz soundscapes to smooth jazzgrooves to experimental jazz to the full jazzexplosions in songs that easily took over 15 minutes or more, well you actually loose all experience of time and place while listening...

Herbie Hancock, Eddie Henderson and the band took almost 3 hours the time to show their abundance of talent, not boring for a second. For us, it's clear, after so many years in the music scene, Herbie Hancock and Eddie Henderson still sound as fresh and creative as young artists and yet have an abundance of unparallelled talent and mastership. (Much respect! EZ)

When the giant jazz chameleon Hancock pays little Belgium a visit, you might as well get yourself a front row seat. That's exactly what the Freestyle team did. We sat back and enjoyed, tapping our feet or drifting away...

From the first few minutes it was clear that Herbie Hancock was not a talented stand-up comedian, but it sure showed that this was not about to be a dead-serious calculated performance. Bringing together jazz legends and young talented musicians, Herbie brought us probably the best jazz sextet of this decade.

Liftoff with the amazing percussionist Cyro Baptista who, during the course of this performance, came up with some 30 instruments with probably 30 exotic names, creating entrancing rythms with all of them. Absolutely stunning what atmosphere this man could create on his own. With 'Fascinating Rythm' and led by Baptista, the band kicked off in a both stilish and groovy way.

Herbie completely left out the concept of 'songs'. All compositions by legendary composer George Gershwin that were played, were weaven together, played both swinging and intimate, creating a sound tapestry that grabbed the audience by the nuts. Drummer Terry Line Carrington was a revelation, bass player Ira Coleman played his instrument in a very sensitive manner, not the straight-ahead bass playing we're used to. Eddie Henderson played most of the themes to the songs with painful precision, saxophone player Eli Degibri masters every possible way of creating sounds with a saxophone : long, distant notes or funky melodies, all brought using the same abundancy of energy.

Herbie Hancock was the brain behind the scene, giving his musicians every possible chance to prove themselves. But when Cyro Baptista and Terry Carrington produced thin layers of ambient-like tones, Herbie got all the frowned attention when he dived into his piano and played the snares by hand, accompanied it by ticking on the wood and making the psychedelic atmosphere complete. In 'Here Comes the Honeyman' Eddie Henderson provided an astonishing finale and when the audience didn't stop applauding, a beautiful 12-minute version of the classic 'Maiden Voyage' was a worthy closing of this classic concert. When everybody stood up from his seat to give these living legends a worthy tribute, the Freestyle team took a deep breath plus some more pictures...   (Outspan)
