Overview
Another year has gone by in the music industry, so it's time again to look back on what happened  during the so much hyped Y2K year. Well, first of all, the Y2K year was as much a non-event as it was hyped. What did it bring in music ? Y2K made Napster & MP3 as popular as the president elections in the USA. Euh, that says it all, doesn't it ? Nonsense discussions about nonsense! Now that every fourteen year old girl is downloading her favourite worthless hits instead of giving her precious money to a worthless compilation CD, the record companies go bezirk for sure.
These same record companies have neglected for so many years to provide real value in their products and are now wondering why people find it normal not to pay a penny for this crap. Why pay for a hit song that only lasts for 3 weeks ? A hard disk is most ideal for this type of music as it is definitely read-write, so you can delete the MP3 file after discovering that tune you downloaded is as cheap as the wash machine powder advertising tune.
For anyone into real music, Napster & MP3 are doing quite the inverse of what record companies claim. So much music gets exchanged, discovered and explored, much more than you can discover during a record hunt in a record shop. Unknown artists have an unlimited outlet for their creations and when one really loves a track, you'll end up buying it anyway as you want the real deal with full dynamics in the sound.
What other things happened ? Well, unfortunately, the demise of several styles that flourished during the past years. There is deephouze, most likely bringing more releases than ever of meaningless cheap rehearsals of everything we already know and heard. It's getting really hard these days to find a deephouzer that touches more than skin deep. Another one is lounge music, or Ibiza whatever. Our commercial dudes did it again with an overflow of CDs with sofas or beaches on the cover and for sure all featuring that Nightmares On Wax track. Well, yes, it's also getting hard these days to find a good lounge album as well. Not much happened in techno or drum'n'bass as well, mostly releases under the motto, the harder the better.
Now, you'll wonder, what was cool in Y2K ? It was the year of the blend of garage and deephouze, with Naked Records at the forefront releasing attractive covers as well as tracks. It was the year of nu-jazzfunk, with energetic funky warm vibes for chilling of which Unforscene or Pat Barry made some of the best during the past year. But, perhaps most of all, it was the year of the ambient-chilly-electro revival. Slightly experimental, with both a look into the future as well as the past sounds of '93- '94, this music popped up from all over the world. The Focus, Neo Ouija, Pitchcadet label and so much more all brought bleepy masterpieces for the real intelligent chill. Well, we let you discover all interesting outlets we collected with so much pleasure during the past year in the following lists compiled by Howie, Bartie, Outspan and Ez. Enjoy.

20 Things That Managed To Surprise Me In 2000
1.
title : Snert
format : Album (2xLP)
artist : Audiomontage aka Jimpster
label : Freerange
surprised because of : numerous things like being so versatile, so multi-layered, so creative, so funky, so entertaining, so refreshing, so very much '2000 is the Jimpster-year' and not even that bad at all. (Just kidding, from the funky 'Whatcha gonna do' to the chilly 'Return to Utopiam' it brings up this warm feeling from underneath)
2.
title : Different Flavours
format : Album (2xLP)
artist : Syrup
label : Compost
surprised because of : being made after 1979. This album is soo damn hot and funky you'd think they just stripped away the vocals from some great Blackyrds or Fatback album. Not so, with basement stuff, disco/deep-house/samba and even some weird electronics, this album is indeed sweet as syrup with different flavours from strawberry to chocolate to maybe even some pineapple with bananas.
3.
title : Saturday Nite Live
format : Compilation (2xLP)
artist : compiled by The Idjut Boys
label : NuPhonic
surprised because of : being so damn smooth. (Contrary to the quite srtaight-forward tech-house of the Idjut Boys own production and dj-sets, this collection of rare 70s grooves and modern jazz-funk is 100% pure happy happy joy joy to have)
4.
title : I Love to Love
format : 12 »
artist : MAW feat. Jody Watley and Roy Ayers
label : MAW
surprised because of : being housy orgasmic heavenly stuff. The soul voice of Jody, the deep beats of MAW and the vibraphone genius of Roy Ayers make this definitely the deep house track of the non-deep house year 2000. A MAW classic (again…).
5.
title : Project Unison
format : Album
artist : Metamatics and Clatterbox
label : Neo Ouija
surprised because of : heralding the year of chilly electronics (continuďng on the path set forth by pioneers like Aphex Twin and Autechre, the better availability of hardware and software really made for a boom of electronics this year in all flavours, forms and qualities)
6.
title : One and The Same (Ensign Dub)
format : 12 "
artist : Modaji
label : Laws Of Motion
surprised because of : being so universaly fantasticely funky. (Definitely the best 12 » I layed my hands upon this year, the dub version is especially great in bringing ultra-deep live bass, class-A moogs and a soulful voice together in an essential track, IS THAT FU** MODAJI ALBUM COMING OR WHAT ?)
7.
title : The Soul of Science
format : compilation (1CD)
artist : compiled by Kirk Degorgio & Ian O'Brien
label : Logic Records
surprised because of : high degree of personal choice (from 70s soundscapes over modern Latin to electronic chill) with only one connection - quality.
8.
title : The Chocolat EP
format : EP
artist : Afro Elements
label : Internal Bass
surprised because of : once again pointing out to the injustice the almost non-existent distribution of Internal Bass records in Belgium is. (You can slurp the chocolate right out of your woofers with tracks like 'It Remains To Be Seen' and 'Chocolate (Mr. Gone's Soul in Space Mix) - Dee-liciouz)
9.
title : Crazy Legs Vol. 2
format : 12 »
artist : Pat Barry
label : Guidance
surprised because of : having a higher money's worth than most of the lounge-compilations that were released this year. (Ohw so jazzy grooves that make my rain-filled'n gray Belgian days)
10.
title : The Sulston Connection
format : EP
artist : Unforscene
label : Kudos
surprised because of : coming out of nowhere to stay. Unforscene brings modern funk on the by now widely acclaimed Kudos label. UK rulez.
11.
title : Glüklich IV
format : Compilation
artist : various
label : Compost
surprised because of : what one can do with the concept 'Brazilian Flavours'. (Selecting housy grooves like the Gotan Project, picking some steamy Latin stuff with David Matthews or being a loungy Mexican with the Kyoto Jazz Massive)
12.
title : The Ageing Young Rebel
format : mini-album (2x10 " )
artist : Dj Food
label : Ninja Tune
surprised because of : darkness (the dark poem by ken nordine blends perfectly with the majestic beats to create the perfect happy atmosphere-crasher)
13.
title : Lost Soul
format : EP
artist : Modaji
label : Laws Of Motion
surprised because of : bringing the four-good-tracks-for-a-fair-price concept into lounge (Borrowed from the chill eletronics labels, this means all four tracks are compellingly good and yet so easy to use - just put the record on the turntable and chill…)
14.
title : From Here To G
format : album
artist : Leggo Beast
label : Pork
surprised because of : not surprising me by surprising me again because I know surprising is what the Pork label is good at (that is just why all Pork albums are all the same : they are all different)
15.
title : Eclipse/Silent Messenger
format : 12 "
artist : Kyoto Jazz Massive
label : Compost
surprised because of : actually being massively jazzy (and coming from Kyoto I guess). Spacy downbeat that fits every mood, they did lots of great remixes like for Yosushi-or-whatever Ide, but I thought mentioning their own tracks is more honorable being Japanese stuff and all that)
16.
title : Lounge Lizard
format : EP
artist : Mettle Music Collective
label : Toko
surprised because of : never thought I'd fall again more for smooth deep-house grooves, moogs and live sax but this one just did it (like James Bond said : never say never again).
17.
title : Operation Jaz
format : 12"
artist : Glenn Underground
label : NLC
surprised because of : well, maybe not that much surprised. Admit it, it wasn't the GU year but this track nevertheless makes sure we don't forget what a great deep-house producer the man is.
18.
title : The Next Stage
format : EP
artist : Gene Hunt
label : NLC
surprised because of : being more acid-jazz than deep house and anyone who knows me just a little bit should know this is just the stuff I'm looking for.
19.
title : The Days Are Just Packed
format : EP
artist : World Of Apples
label : Giant45
surprised because of : Living up to the first EP. Mostly, keeping a promise made with a great first release is quite hard but World Of Apples (Ewan Pearson) keeps his promise.
20.
title : Someday (ExtendedSpiritMix)
format : 12 "
artist : Silent Poets
label : Yellow
surprised because of : (partly) filling the need for a decent Future Sound Of Jazz compilation. (Excellent lounge stuff and do I care I don't know anything more creative to describe it ?)
Say VeginEssentials2000
Best Track
Lackluster
: Suntrap
: Focus
One of the very best examples of the atmospheric nu-skool electronics that where released en-masse last year.
Kid Spatula
: Come On Board
: Planet Mu
Every once in a while, between all his heavy distortion and weird experiments, Mike Paradinas comes up with a real gem.
dj Food
: The Ageing Young Rebel feat Ken Nordine
: Ninja Tune
Could have been written as a soundtrack for a depressing Film-Noir and features sublime lyrical content. That's why this jazz-cut was one of the most original tracks of 2000.
Wass
: 2:2
: Hobby Industries
Hobby industries is an Ambient-electronics label from Denmark. They've released lots of good things last year, but this track really stands out: spacey, melancholic, dreamy, ... waaaaaah!
Best Single / EP
Protocol
: NDC
: Isophlux
Very intrigueing EP with 6 atmospheric tracks. Electronics balancing between old-skool bliss and nu-skool experiments. This must be about the only release in my list where a woman did the producing, so I guess this is kind of unique, specially in the IDM genre ...
Pat Barry
: Crazy Leggs vol 2
: Guidance
This man delivers the most enjoyable future-funk/laidback house I've heard last year. Guidance keeps up with the high standards. Mad Respect to both!
Demusphere
: Journeys in Space
: Parallax
First release on this label and the only release of Demusphere I know of. Simply great downtempo 90s jazz-funk with lots of live instrumentation.
World of Apples
: The Days are just Packed
: giant45
Three tracks of the finest laidback music. This man has also produced music under the name MAAS on Soma records, but I prefer his chilly-lounge releases on giant45.
Quango
: Sky's The Limit
: PAN
I.G. Culture is famous for his quality productions on the People imprint, this side project on PAN is no exception. There's a future-funk mix, a deep-house mix, an electro-breaks mix and an instrumental version so it fits at all occasions.
Aemic
: Aleph
: Musik Aus Strom
This is a co-production between André Estermann and Micheal Fakesh (of Funkstörung fame), doing just what their good at: magical beat-architecture and minimal melodies. Featuring cool artwork by the Designers Rebuplic.
Unforscene
: Remote Viewing
: Kudos
Suddenly, from out of nowhere came Unforscene. With their progressive jazzy/funky/trippy/smokey-beats blending type-of-thang. Once again Jimpster delivers the goodies with his remix work, converting Tall Girl into a steamy future-funk ride.
Microstoria
: Improvisers
: Sonig
Seemingly structureles soundscapes, recorded live at a concert in Cologne (DE). Heavy chill-atmosphere guaranteed when playing this record.
Best Album
Audiomontage
: Snert : Freerange
(see review)
Arovane
: Tides
: City Centre Offices
"The perfect relaxation therapy crammed into merely 40 minutes of restful music and caputered on a single plastic disc for all eternity." (see review)
Glenn Underground
: Lounge Excursions
: Guidance
Jazzy Deep-House & Downtempo Cuts, GU continues to deliver the quality.
Dub Tractor
: Delay
: FX
Lightweighted, easy going rhythms, not too experimental so they won't hurt the atmosphere and not too simple so they won't sound cheap. (see review)
Wechsel Garland
: Wechsel Garland
: Morr Music
Maybe it's experimental jazz music, maybe it's classical music, maybe, maybe it's nu-future-retro-post-something ... This still doesn't make any sense huh? Let's just say this is really something! (see review)
Metamatics and Clatterbox
: Project Unison : Neo Ouija
(see review)
Lackluster
: Container
: Focus
Absolute lush ambient electronica. After numerous mod's, mp3's, cd-r's and some maxi singles, this is the first "official" album for Finlands Esa Ruoho. Looking forward to hear more from him!
Arovane
: Atol Scrap : DIN
(see review)
Yoshinori Sunahara
: PAN AM The Sound of '70s
: Bungalow
(see review)
Best Compilation
Various
: Fine Gold
: Dorado
Originally released in 96, but highly essential acid-jazz and downbeat! Thanks to the heavenly vocals of Jhelisa, the ultra-slow jazz from Brooklyn Funk Essentials, the magnificent atmosphere of D*Note, the touching violins and piano of Outside, etc etc.
Various
: Cottage Industries : Neo Ouija
(see review)
Various
: Soulfood : Cookin'
(see review)
EZ BoyEssentials2000
Best Album
Tosca
: Suzuki : G-Stone
The father of lounge, Dorfmeister sets the standard.
LTJ Bukem
: Journey Inwards : Good Looking
From soft drum'n'bass to warm loungy stuff, all is excellent
St. Germain
: Tourist : Blue Note
Although the album was heavily over-hyped, it's still a masterpiece from an icon in the music world.
P'Taah
: Compressed Light : Ubiquity
Chris Brann evolves from atmospheric deephouze to complex future electronic jazz, well done.
Pete Namlook & Move D
: AudioLounge : Fax
When these 2 heads get together, it's heavy chill guaranteed
Xaver Fischer Trio
: II : Unique
Some of the best acid jazz featuring warm acoustics & superb vocals
Lackluster
: Container : Focus
From the reference setting label for electro chill music, excellent
Snert
: Audiomontage : Freerange
The new millenium funk package from Jimpster
Metamatics & Clatterbox
: Project Unison : Neo Ouija
Superb ICM, or intelligent chill music
Flanger : Templates : NTone Heavily experimental future jazz
Glenn Underground
: Lounge Excursions : Guidance
Thanks to a pearl like Funki-Ghetto, the album made it to essentials Y2K
Best Compilation
Cottage Industries : Neo Ouija Killer compilation from excellent label for ICM.
Dub plates from the Lamp : Pork Pork explores into progressive chilly vibes.
Soul of Science : Obsessive Genius Ian O'Brian composes an open-minded view on electronic music spanning over 2O years
Neurokinetic : Toytronic New millenium electro at its best.
Jazzanova : The Remixes : JCR Although we didn't like the title, we must admit it's a superb package of perfectionistic remixes.
Lounge Deluxe 1 & 2
: Soap Records
DJ Monte Larue from the Netherlands is one of the few composers of lounge compilations who still provides the real smoke. Uncompromised chill guaranteed.
Bare Essentials : Naked Standard setting label Naked for vocal driven deep garage house with selection of its best releases.
Best 12" / EP
Unforscene
: Remote Viewing : Kudos
Unforscene offers some of the best nu-acid-jazz on this planet in Y2K
Teddy G : Hutchinson : Rotax A highly acclaimed artist on a highly acclaimed label
Julien Jabre
: The Jungle EP : Basic
Fortunately, some deephouze this year that still goes really deep
Slope : Smooth : Mermaid Records IDM from the Netherlands
Dieter Reith
: Love & Fantasy EP : Groove Attack
Unreleased track from jazz genius Dieter Reith. Excellent.
Oscar : Well Tuned releases 2,3 & 4 : Well Tuned All in one package of deep grooves with lots of latin, percussion & jazz elements
Eri Ito : Sona mi areru ec sancitu : Nite Grooves Deep grooves with afro touch.
Pat Barry
: Crazy Legs vol 2 : Guidance
Probably the deepest Guidance release of this year.
Masters at Work feat. J Watley & Roy Ayers : I love to love : MAW Celebrating their 10 years in the scene this year, but the real new killer stuff
was this collaboration with Roy Ayers
Eric Kupper : Havana : Hysteria He's not releasing too much under his own name, but when he does, it's the bomb
