| Kirk Degiorgio presents As One: 21st century soul (2lp, ubiquity) The future sound of jazz through the eyes of techno/jazz-innovator Kirk Degiorgio, featuring Jimpster on Fender Rhodes and soulful vocals by a certain Jinadu. Enough said, this is brilliant! EDC: passport (2lp, blue note) Dutch new signing for Blue Note which at first reminded me of Smoke City, DJ Krush & Toshinori Kondo or Talvin Singh, but don't let that bother you. It's a compliment, really! And it's not lounge! Chill and enjoy… Numbers: safety in numbers (2lp, main squeeze) Demus (co-producer of the legendary Young Disciples debut and one half of 2 Banks of 4) delivers a new episode in the 'broken beat'-saga with the vocal help of Valerie Etienne and Carleen Anderson a/o. No need to say this stuff is deep and very soulful. Dig! Ian O ' Brien: a history of things to come (2lp, peacefrog) Although equally exploring the thin line between techno and jazz, this album is very different from his friends' "21st century soul"-album. Collaborators here are Domu (check the programming on the mad "Veksel") and Nathan Haines and the sound is very futuristic. Definitely one of the best producers in the genre… SK Radicals: when will we belong? (2lp, people) People's first artist-album is a winner! A soulful mixture of rare groove, house, hip-hop and lots and lots of jazz, SK Radicals' debut will appeal to a lot of listeners out there. Spread the word! Fertile Ground: remixes no.2 (12", counterpoint) Following their 100% quality-album "Perception", this second remix-package is pure bliss! Waiwan brings a very uplifting version of new track "Take Me Higher", with a tempo between house and d&b. Very nice. Mr. Kaidi Tatham brings out his finest soul and jazz inspirations. Think Lonnie Liston Smith-style fusion with a Bugz in the Attic-twist. So so so beautiful… Shaun Escoffery: into the blue (4hero remix) (12", oyster music) Chet Baker: 'round about midnight (Gotan Project remix) (12", mo'smog) And more remixes while we're at it. 4hero's production skills and this man's vocals make perfect bed-partners and deeeeeep Detroit-house is the result. Dego and Marc are the Masters, no doubt. <> Hot on the heels of their excellent debut-lp, the Gotan Project showcase their talent again by delivering this marvelous remix of the Monk-classic. Stéphane Attias: solid pleasure (12", visions) Uschi Classen feat. Kimra: now illuminate (12", earthproject) Kudu: space / transit (10", bitasweet) Family business: Stéphane does some tunes for brother Alex' Visions-label. Deep Detroit stuff and broken soulful beats. Visions = Quality. No doubt! <> Miss Classen (Ballistic Brothers, Black Science Orchestra) previews her upcoming debut album with an excellent deep house/techno trip. <> "Space" and "Transit" are the results of Marc de Clive-Lowe, Domu and Seiji joining forces in the studio. Mad broken beats for the headstrong! Squarepusher: untitled (12", warp) White sleeve, black record, vinyl only and it was NME's 'Single of the Week'… Tom Jenkinson's follow up to the funky 'My Red Hot Car' is here! And it's a fucking killer tune! Electronica (and thus: funk), garage, drum & bass; it's all of this and yet it isn't. Squarepusher strikes again… Pest: slap on tap / hlazy (7", ninja tune) And finally some new stuff from the Ninja's! Fresh new sounds from "five young men on a diet of fry-ups, weed, Ornette Coleman and UK Garage", according to the press release. Unlike anything you've ever heard before, really. Check for yourself on www.ninjatune.net |
