| 1. Planetary Assault Systems
: diesel drudge : Peacefrog Never guessed a genuine techno record to be on top of my list? Well, this early gem by Luke Slater had a jungle atmoshpere to it that just won't let me go. Essential electronics. 2. Jimpster : messages from the hub : Kudos Had a hard time finding this album by downbeat genius Jamie Odell, but the various atmospheres and rythmic experiments this gem offers, make it worth. A very personal approach to ambient, drum 'n bass, broken beatz and carefully selected samples with British accents all mixed in Jamie's Central Brain Hub. Too bad the interpretation of Herbie Hancocks classic 'Maiden Voyage' is one of the less inspired moments. 3. New Sector Movements : groove on : People Get. All. Stuff. On. People. Now. (and forget about the failed semi RnB album of I.G. Culture, all the stuff on People is breathtakingly refreshing, imagine jumping into a pool of ice-cold water after laying in the sun for three hours with butter over your torso). 4. Bullitnuts : 1st of the day : Pork Artists like Bullitnuts, Baby Mammoth etc. etc. made the Pork label one of Britains finest export products (closely followed by Scottish Single Malt Whiskey and Jamie Odell). 5. Willie Griffen : on the dancefloor EP : Farris Wheel Rare Boo/GU production. For people still hungry for real deep house (that are probably close to starvation now). 6. Daniel Ibbotson : Imitation/Stumble : Fenetik Fenetik, a sublabel of Soma, brings delicious jazz vibes that blows away all standard lounge stuffs nowadays with a big... ehm, trumpet blow and funky snare. Definitely wort a thorough check-out. 7. Jimpster : La-di-da (Bullitnuts Remixes) : Kudos If you like the Bullitnuts and you like Jimpster, you'll definitely like the Bullitnuts remixes of Jimpster. It's only a matter of logic. The housy touch in the second version definitely works out fine, a suprising approach to the original chilly La-di-da EP. |

| SPECTRUM'S FAVES | |
| - 4hero: creating patterns (3lp, talkin' loud) One word: classic. Everybody with a taste for soul and jazz should own at least one copy of this masterpiece. Dego and Marc Mac hold the future of black music more than anyone else. A pure joy to listen to from beginning to end and a big step forward from their previous work. Ask me in a few years and I'll possibly put it in my all time favorites charts. Album of the year, no doubt. - Flanger: inner space / outer space (2lp, ninja tune) Burnt Friedman and Atom Heart coming to mama Ninja for their third child with an innovative and exciting approach to jazz, a rare combination in modern electronica. Do the boogaloo! - Future Sounds Of Jazz - vol 8 (3lp, compost) State of the Art : Japan - an examination of nu-fusion & future funk compiled by DJ Mochizuki (2lp, foundation music) Massive compilations this month that kick the current overflow of so-called "lounge"-compilations in the teenage nuts! Michael Reinboth drops the eighth instalment in the very successful and legendary FSOJ-series. Again a heavyweight selection of fresh new talent from the modern jazz spectrum. Too many highlights to mention so just buy this one, you won't be disappointed. DJ Mochizuki kicks of a new compilation series that will focus on one country with each new episode. Japan is not so strange as a starter because these hard to find gems prove once again that the Japanese have a unique talent to produce some of the finest leftfield music around. 2 essentials. Really! - People… make the world go round part 3 - footsteps (2lp, people) Da One Away: trash da junk (12", main squeeze) Bugz in the @ttic comin' atcha! Da One Away (aka Dego & Kaidi Tatham) rocking leftfield crowds all over with this broken funk monster that's on everybody's playlist at the moment. Hit! People release a third compilation of oldies and exclusives that doesn't sound as overwhelming as the first but surely has some great tracks by Nathan Haines, Phil Asher, IG Culture and the other usual suspects. Plus it has Ne-Groove/Pure Filth's "Should have been you" on it, which has been a favorite for a long time! Keep an eye open for the SK Radicals' "When will we belong"-album! "A raw but fresh mixture of modern UK soul, funky house and freeform-jazz", according to SNC (and it includes "Reachin' 4 the farside"!!!) - Ananda Project: bahia / expand your mind (remixes) (ltd. 10", nite grooves) Written and produced by Chris Brann. After remixes for his P'taah moniker on Ubiquity his Ananda Project album also gets a remix treatment. On this very limited taster Kyoto Jazz Massive showcase their talent yet again with an excellent version of Bahia. I just can't get enough of the Okino brothers. On the flip King Britt' Scuba remix is on the nu-soul tip. Nice and groovy. Very curios to hear the full remix album… - Sie: superpro-kid (12", pussyfoot) Funky as hell, this new Pussyfoot 12"! Sie will soon drop his second album and this taster forecasts a winner… With the help of Ernest Saint-Laurent "Superpro-kid" is a treat for all you party headz out there. People who won't dance to this are not funky! "Bobby", on the b-side is an off-beat funker with twisted moog and sax. Nuphonic's Fuzz Against Junk deliver my favorite on this ep in the form of a top class, jazzed-down remix! - Viper Squad / Big Bang: codename:winter / ping pong (12", arision) This second release on Simone "Big Bang" Serritella's new Arision imprint is really something. "Codename:Winter" is an ultra deep future funk, techno-ish track that will stick in your head for a very long time. Blame it to the string sample and the handclaps. Big Bang, who previously released on Far Out, comes with a full album soon. "Ping Pong" is one for the true beboppers: furious and fast with a killer bassline. Unfortunately I missed the first Arision-release from Cuica but I ordered it and it will be reviewed right here. Stay tuned! - Straight No Chaser winter 2001 issue (magazine) Definately worth this space! 4hero cover-story, Jon Lucien, Norma Jean Bell, Gotan Project, New Sector Movements Live Report (!!!), Herbert. Global charts from people like Koop, Nicola Conte, UFO and many others. Plus many reviews, the usual Jazz Café-adds J and much much more. Subscribe now and get the new DJ-Kicks cd from VIKTER DUPLAIX for free!! Dig for it now… |
