Chart of the month
1. Xaver Fischer Trio : II : Unique records
- Nice mixture of fine melodic synth grooves, acid jazz and soulfull vocal acoustic tracks
2. Susumu Yokota : Sakura : Leaf/Skintone records
- Creative and unique warm and fuzzy electro-ambient-jazz blend for chilly moments
3. V.A. Street Suite : Connoisseur Collection Ltd
- In the same series as Bitter Suite, a superb collection of seventies and early eighties jazzfunk
4. V.A. Future Sound of Jazz 7 : Compost
- After seven issues, a little deja-vu, but still good for a nice track here and there with warmer and more melodic tracks anyway than issues five and six
5. V.A. Megasoft Office 2000 : F-Comm
- Due to lounge overload on the store shelves, another compilation that doesn't really touch your soul. Still recommendable for people who were not yet too much into chill and lounge music.

Very nice pork-style acid-jazz cuts.

Nice melodic electronica from Micael Fakesh (Funkstorung) and André Estermann.
7. Metamatics : Evening Star / Piano 2 : Hydrogen Dukebox
Two short ambient soundscapes on this 7", in addition to the "Neo Ouija" album.
8. Swap : SWP4MAS1 : Musik Aus Strom
Weird experimental electro-ambient.
9. Slope : Smooth : Mermaid
Interesting release with jazzy electronics. From Jazzanova's Sonar Kollektiv.
0. Electric Sheep : locust lunch ep : Musik Aus Strom

Albums of the month
1. EVA : Extra Vehicular Activity : Kickin' 1995
Classic chill-out ambient album, a must have!
2. CiM : reference : deFocus 2000
Dreamy melodic electro-ambient from the very productive Focus label.
3. Various : Boredom is Deep and Mysterious : April 1994
Recently discovered Ambient and Soundscapes compilation from Denmark.
4. Ovuca : onclements : Rephlex 2000
No less than 4 LP's containing 71 (!) tracks featuring all sorts of electronic experiments. Going from soft soundscapes to harsh µ-ziq style breakbeats.
Old-Skool tunes of the month
1. Tangerine Dream : Phaedra : Virgin 1974
Classic album with genre-defining ambient music.
2. Fatback : XII : Ace / Southbound 1979
Rather cheesy album, contains the very first track with rap-lyrics: "King Tim III".

Entertaining Disco-Funk stuff.

nu-skool backstock
1. Afro Elements : ju-ju : Internal Bass
When an Internal Bass record reaches the Belgian shelves, hang on to your nuts. From the overly delicious 'chocolate' ep comes this smooth nu-skool funk gem.
2. Daniel Ibbotson : starway (jumpster remix) : Genetik Music
Never heard of this label before. Nevertheless, ass-kicking trumpets in this track make my ears tingle. Stylish.
3. Unforscene : the sulton connection : Kudos
Couldn't choose between the three trippy acid-jazz beauties, just get yourself this EP. One more reason to make september quite a succesfull month when it comes to laidback beats, breath-taking horns and trumpets and overall... very jazzy.
4. Silent Poets : someday (extended spirit mix) : Yellow
Forget the Jazzanova hyphe, Extended Spirit gives you all the funky lounge stuff you would ever need...another top-release for the French label that has been in the front line of refreshing music since its inception.
5. Silent Poets : someday (mighty bop mix) : Yellow
This reworked hip-hop version has such a huge 'cruisin-my-69-caddilac-cabriolet-through-downtown-san-francisco-feel ' that it would be unfair not to draw your attention to it.
6. Gene Hunt : the next stage : NLC
Ah, finally, missed out on it in A'dam but this fantastic NLC release makes me think of the legendary 'Fish Fry' EP by GU that showed indeed that decent deep-house artists can make decent slo-mo stuff.
7. Teddy G : soul echoes : Rotax
Moogs, black voices, deep bass, you know the deal. Not that we're getting bored with quality deep house but the versatility of acid-jazz stuff is the funk sound of the new millenium if you ask me.
8. Solar House : the roots : Large
Well, this b-side track of some deep-house ep deserves more than an 8th place but it has been such a great down-tempo month already. This one just adds to the fun.
(see review)
9. World of Apples : prelude : Giant45
A quite long prelude if you ask me. World of Apples walks the thin line between modern techno-eletronics and cool ambient.
10. Azymuth : caramba (ron hunter edit) : Far Out
From the 70s Latin band that is still active today, some remixes by modern artists have been relased. Far from being all interesting, this version manages to get my feet tapping and my head shaking. It's not far out, but rather damn close to Freestyle quality.
old-skool stuff
Kool & The Gang : kool & the gang : 1969
From one of their very first albums comes this '60s funk gem that shows this well-known band had class. Too bad it all vanished into cheap wanna-be disco sometime after 1977, but not before giving the world some classic funk anthems. Like this one.
